Who’s That ‘Guy’ At Occupy?

Just as the Gadsden Flag has come to represent the Tea Party Movement, a mask has reached iconic status in the ‘Occupy’ movement.

Protesters in Occupy “utopias” across the country are donning a sinister looking mask. It is a mask that resembles the historical English figure, Guy Fawkes. In fact, the British celebrate what is known as Guy Fawkes Day and Bonfire Night, which is coming up on November 5th.

The story of Guy Fawkes dates back to 1605 when a group of unhappy Catholic Englishmen plotted to blow up the House of Parliament in retaliation for King James ordering all Catholic priests to leave the country. The plot was disrupted and Guy Fawkes, one of the Catholic conspirators, was caught in the Parliament cellar with 36 barrels of gun powder, tortured and executed (some say he committed suicide to avoid execution) .

In celebration of the thwarted attack, King James called for bonfires throughout the kingdom to burn Guy Fawkes effigies. Today, the Gunpowder plot is still celebrated with fireworks on the 5th of November as Bonfire Night.

The popularity of Guy Fawkes today is mainly due to the 2006 film “V, for Vendetta” in which a lone wolf, inspired by Guy Fawkes, dons the sinister looking mask and successfully blows up Parliament in his quest of fighting the fictional totalitarian British government.

The mask has become a symbol of anti-establishment sentiment. In 2007, Ron Paul was able to seize on this growing discontent and raised $4 million on Bonfire Night in commemoration of Guy Fawkes.

So, what originated as a celebration of the arrest and execution of a domestic terrorist has morphed into a celebration of Guy Fawkes’ hatred of government tyranny.

But, there is more….

The Guy Fawkes mask has also come to symbolize a group of on-line hackers known as Anonymous. The city of Orlando was recently targeted by this loose group of left-leaning “hacktivists”. This past summer, when the head organizer of “Food not Bombs”, an activist organization that was feeding the homeless in public parks without permits, was arrested in Orlando, Anonymous, in retaliation, targeted high profile Orlando-linked websites including the Orlando Regional Chamber of Commerce and Universal Studio.

Anonymous is also linked with the Occupy Movement in several ways. As far back as January 2011, Anonymous teamed up with journalist David DeGraw, who is credited with coining the phrase “the 99 percent” in his book The Economic Elite vs. The People of the United States, to provide internet security for his online movement. The “We are the 99%” internet meme evolved into a call for action in the form of collective civil disobedience on September 17th on Wall Street.

In August 2011, the amorphous Anonymous released the following pro-occupy video that warned Wall Street “We do not forgive. We do not forget. Expect us.”

Perhaps, the most significant contribution of Anonymous to the Occupy Movement is the hype that it is able to generate. For instance, Anonymous created a buzz back in early October when it threatened to wipe the New York Stock Exchange website “off the internet.” While the attempt did fail, the Chicago Tribune reported that the site “was slow and then unavailable from about 3:35 p.m. to around 3:37 p.m., after which it returned to normal.”

To commemorate Guy Hawkes Day, on November 5th the ‘collective’ Anonymous has promised to wreak online havoc. In anticipation, Occupy protestors have signs “Remember, Remember the 5th of November”.

There is excitement in the “occupations” across the world because the hacktivists have vowed to “kill” Facebook for sharing personal information with the government and to attack the website of FOX News for speaking ill of the occupy folk. Here is the video that issued the threat:

Not only will November 5th be a day dedicated to online hacking, it is also being designated as “Bank Transfer Day”; an occasion for bank customers to show their dissatisfaction with bank policies by transferring their accounts to credit unions.  In hopes of crashing the big banks, specifically Bank of America, this initiative is being pushed hard by those affiliated with the Occupy movement.

Just as the demands of Occupy are vague and scattered, the intent of Anonymous is very difficult to discern. Because of the structure-less, leader-less nature of Anonymous, rumors and hoaxes are typical and there is really no way to verify the credibility of its threats.

Even within the Anonymous community, it is said there is disunity. Some hacktivists pursue a political agenda, while others attack corruption and violations of personal privacy.

So, is it any wonder that a movement so plagued by conflict and violence and void of productive solutions would chose a controversial figure such as Guy Fawkes, a conspirator to mass murder in the name of individual liberty, to symbolize its movement?

On the other hand, the modern day Tea Party movement takes its cue from our founders and rallies around the Gadsden Flag. The motto underneath the rattle snake warns “Don’t Tread on Me” – an unmistakable message pertaining to the snake’s deadly strike.

The rattlesnake itself being a good example of America’s virtues at the time; individually it’s rattles produce no sound, but united they can be heard by all; and while it does not attack unless provoked, it is deadly when stepped upon.

An idea accurately represented in the tea party’s line in the sand against an ever encroaching federal government.

Thank you Linda for the insight and your fight for freedom. I continue to learn more everyday from people like you and this article explains a lot about the Occupy Movement and it’s foundations. It is people like you who shed light on things that most people don’t get or dismiss as hearsay.

You are a true partiot and if most Americans had half of your passion, we would be a better country. Have you talked to any of the Occupiers? Is there any left?

I feel for those who are blinded an cannot see the truth. We should hold a Tea Party meeting at Occupy Orlando soon to speak about American values. Not that some of us have tried. I know Tom, you and others have been down there.

    Thanks for your insight.

  2. Bill says:

    very good, well written.

  3. Twin66 says:

Great article, Linda. When this whole mess blows up, the officials are on notice that this was NEVER just a bunch of hippy types having a little “sit in” I have notified Orlando city officials, as I know you have and they submit that they are well aware of the background and potential for this to get out of control. I don’t see that they have done much to stop it. (although legally limited to do so)
The OO folks are proud to say many OPD’s are on their side and look the other way, when policing the site.

All the officials would have to do, is what you have done so thoroughly…………..LOOK IT UP, ASK QUESTIONS, WATCH THE TELEVISION.

    Well done, my Patriot friend!

  4. Joe says:

Brilliant as well as beautiful!!! Well said indeed!

  5. Mickey Spencer says:

You’ve done a fantastic job of tying in all the facts about the Occupy movement into a single cohesive story digestible by all.

War On Women Can Be Fought At The Polls

By Kim Carroll

Women have the power. They take their right to vote seriously and show up at the polls in greater numbers than men according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

In 2008, 60.4 percent of eligible female voters cast their vote versus 55.7% of eligible males. According to the same study, more women are registered to vote than men, 66.6 million versus 63.5 million. Maybe that’s why the “War on Women” has taken a front seat in this election…

This post kicks off a three-part series about the crisis of spending, debt and deficits.

The next part deals with the interval between now and the inevitable arrival of the Minsky Moment, i.e. the unknown and unknowable time when an unsustainable economic phenomenon suddenly collapses.

The third post will address Gotterdammerung, or what happens after the Minsky Moment.

Is Mack Campaign Getting Desperate?

By Tom Tillison

It’s a fair guess that Connie Mack has seen some recent polling that has gotten his attention.

As the week closed out, the rhetoric coming from the Mack campaign took on a rather fervent pitch. In a press release sent out Thursday, it made the claim that opponent George LeMieux has “endorsed raising Florida’s sales tax to a nation-leading 16 percent.”

Obama’s IPAB Death Panels Limit More Than Just Health Care Access

By L. Persona

Florida Democrats believe they can win a few Republican seats in Congress and are preparing a major offensive against several Republicans facing tough challenges this year. They believe that redistricting gives them a chance to offset the seats they are sure to give up.

However, the Democrats still fail to realize the albatross that ObamaCare places on their party’s efforts…

A Black Guy At The Dallas, TX Tea Party Rally

By Lloyd Marcus

A big well dressed black guy attended the Dallas, TX tea party rally with his white buddy. Both men missed my singing performance on stage minutes earlier.

I asked the black gentleman who had an impressive physique how often he worked out. He replied, “Everyday.” His white buddy said with a chuckle, “He thinks the Tea Party is racist.”
