‘Occupy Orlando’ Permit Issued To Rifqa Bary Family Counsel Shayan Elahi

On Monday, United West’s Tom Trento filed a report bringing into question what role Muslim activist lawyer Shayan Elahi is playing in the ‘Occupy Orlando’ protest currently underway at a city owned park.

In the report, Trento suggested that Elahi was “one of the key people, if not the main person calling the shots” on the ground at the protest.

Trento also detailed Elahi’s past as Counsel for the parents in the well-publicized Rifqa Bary child custody case and went on to state that Elahi;

…”collaborated with the Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR) in the Rifqa Bary case, the same CAIR that is an unindicted co-conspirator, the same CAIR that is HAMAS, the same HAMAS that was founded by the Muslim Brotherhood.”

Today, FPP gained a copy of the permit (see below) issued for the ‘Occupy Orlando’ protest and it shows that Shayan Elahi, who lists himself as ‘Attorney for Occupy Orlando’ on the paperwork, is the individual who applied for the permit at Senator Beth Johnson Park, the site of the protest.

The permit also reinforces a growing perception by many that the City of Orlando is being overly accommodating toward the organizers.  It states at the top of the form that applications ‘Must be submitted 3 business days before‘, yet, the form was submitted and approved on October 14th for the event with began the very next day on the 15th.

It also draws attention to the length of time.  The application states that the requested time was from 8:00AM until 8:59PM on Saturday, October 15, 2011.  As the group is still encamped in the park 5 days later, does this mean that the protestors are in violation of city ordinances governing the use of city owned park facilities?

Another concern that has surfaced is restroom facilities.  The park does not have on-site facilities and there are no Port-O-Lets present, which begs the question, how are these protestors who have been on location for 5 days relieving themselves?  There is some speculation that a nearby hotel is allowing the protestors to use it’s facilities, although the establishment has yet to return our call to confirm.

Considering that the ‘Occupy Orlando‘ FaceBook page reads;  “…we plan to use the revolutionary Arab Spring tactic of mass occupation to restore democracy in America”, Orlando residents have every reason to question just who is behind ‘Occupy Orlando‘ and how exposed is the city financially and, by extension, taxpayers due to the the lenient approach seemingly taken by city officials.

Tom quickly established himself as an integral part of the tea party movement in Orlando. He's the original founder of the Central Florida Tea Party Council and Editor-In-Chief of the conservative news site Florida Political Press. He's known for his laid back style and intensity of opinion, which he prefers sharing in open parking lots with plenty of room to pontificate.

Verrry interesting. What the hell is the connection here and why is Orlando not enforcing the law? Someone needs to do more digging and get in front of the Mayor and City Commission. Perhaps some of the real grass roots Tea Party folks could pull a permit for a one day assembly, break all the same laws, and sue for unequal treatment when they are forced out or fined, as we know they would be. Alternatively, it may be time to get the Orange County Sheriff involved and present all the documentation of the goings on. The law is the law and the City may be complicit in the group breaking the laws they have.

  2. Fact Check says:

The permit was issued for use of amplified sound. Since Sat. the 15th no use of amplified sound has been used. In answer to your question, no, they are not violating the law. The PUBLIC park is open from 6am-11pm. They are allowed to be there. Everyone has been in compliance since day 1. And are using nearby restrooms respectably. On another note, using the attorney’s religious background in a demonizing manner, in order to delegitimize the entire movement, is a pathetic & hateful tactic reserved for schoolyard bullies. You should be ashamed of yourself.

  3. TomT says:

Fact Check, the fact that the attorney is a Muslim is relevant in relation to the statement on the Occupy Orlando FB page that references “revolutionary Arab Spring tactics”…

    I do understand your point on the permit being for amplified sound, however, that alone does not suggest that the group is entirely in compliance with all city ordinances. Perhaps you should check out my earlier report;

    http://www.floridapoliticalpress.com/2011/10/18/occupy-orlando-a-day-in-the-life/

What I am ashamed of is that one group of people appear to be given preferential treatment by city officials that is not extended to the public at large.

  4. [...] Tom Tillison from the Florida Political Press also reported what Trento discovered: that the permit for the event was signed by Elahi. [...]

  5. Working Man says:

Tom, While you reporting this please take notes and post them on what businesses are helping these punks. Who is supplying food, electric, financing (these punks are broke) or any type of support so that us working people can boycott them.

Thank You for the updates and your time. Because keeping up with these parasites is hard for us productive members of society that wouldn’t even know they existed except for what we see on the news (they have no effect on our lives). This is a media created problem, not anything that is a real threat to anything.

  6. Linda says:

Ask Regional Chamber of Commerce why they were powering up the Occupy Live camera this morning (October 20th)! 407-425-1234
Ask DoubleTree why they are allowing Occupy to use their bathroom facilities! 407-425-4455 (Richard-front desk manager)

  7. Kathy says:

Although everyone in this country has the right to peacefully protest, camping out in PUBLIC Parks for weeks doesn’t appear to fall within the scope of ANY City’s Ordinances. City officials who allow a prolonged event such as this are not representing the best interests of ALL residents. If taxpayers’ funds are being used as a result of the city officials’ “bad judgment”, it constitutes inappropriate use.

  8. [...] in October of 2011, Tom Tillison of the Florida Political Press revealed that the permit for Occupy Orlando was issued to Shayan Elahi. The article quotes Tom Trento of United West linking Mr. Elahi to CAIR: [...]

War On Women Can Be Fought At The Polls

By Kim Carroll

Women have the power. They take their right to vote seriously and show up at the polls in greater numbers than men according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

In 2008, 60.4 percent of eligible female voters cast their vote versus 55.7% of eligible males. According to the same study, more women are registered to vote than men, 66.6 million versus 63.5 million. Maybe that’s why the “War on Women” has taken a front seat in this election…

The Interest Bomb Is Ticking

By: George Noga

This post kicks off a three-part series about the crisis of spending, debt and deficits.

The next part deals with the interval between now and the inevitable arrival of the Minsky Moment, i.e. the unknown and unknowable time when an unsustainable economic phenomenon suddenly collapses.

The third post will address Gotterdammerung, or what happens after the Minsky Moment.

Is Mack Campaign Getting Desperate?

By Tom Tillison

It’s a fair guess that Connie Mack has seen some recent polling that has gotten his attention.

As the week closed out, the rhetoric coming from the Mack campaign took on a rather fervent pitch. In a press release sent out Thursday, it made the claim that opponent George LeMieux has “endorsed raising Florida’s sales tax to a nation-leading 16 percent.”

Obama’s IPAB Death Panels Limit More Than Just Health Care Access

By L. Persona

Florida Democrats believe they can win a few Republican seats in Congress and are preparing a major offensive against several Republicans facing tough challenges this year. They believe that redistricting gives them a chance to offset the seats they are sure to give up.

However, the Democrats still fail to realize the albatross that ObamaCare places on their party’s efforts…

A Black Guy At The Dallas, TX Tea Party Rally

By Lloyd Marcus

A big well dressed black guy attended the Dallas, TX tea party rally with his white buddy. Both men missed my singing performance on stage minutes earlier.

I asked the black gentleman who had an impressive physique how often he worked out. He replied, “Everyday.” His white buddy said with a chuckle, “He thinks the Tea Party is racist.”
