College Officials Shut Down Student Conservative Group After Seeing Anti-Obama Literature

(Lake Worth, FL) On Tuesday September 7, 2010 at around 11:00am one Palm Beach State College (PBSC) student and two Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) members, state chairman Daniel P. Diaz and state vice chairman Eddie Shaffer, were shut down and had campus police called on them after tabling and recruiting during club rush at the College. The PBSC student, Christina Beattie, had received prior permission from college administrator Olivia Ford-Morris to promote her organization on campus via telephone and email communication.

On the day of club rush, officials approached the group and after seeing information about the organization and its ideals criticizing Barack Obama’s economic policy. Ms. Ford-Morris was visibly disturbed by the material presented, published by the Heritage Foundation, criticizing President Obama’s administration. College officials then called the campus police to assure the group left campus. Ms. Ford-Morris denied having ever talked to Ms. Beattie about giving permission to the organization to be a part of PBSC club rush.

“I was shocked and offended by her dishonesty. She outright denied giving me permission to table at Club Rush simply because she disagreed with my beliefs! The fact is, she was using her administrative power to silence the conservative opposition.” said Christina Beattie.

Christina Beattie, a student at PBSC has been the lead organizer of a weeklong recruitment event for YAF. Christina saw a need for a conservative club on campus and decided to create a YAF Chapter. Beattie inquired with college Student Activities Coordinator, Ms. Olivia Ford-Morris, via email about being allowed to recruit at the college rush. To Christina’s surprise Ms. Ford-Morris called her and allowed the group to table at the event. Other groups on campus attended the event and tabled, but had not registered with the student activities coordinator. These groups remained untouched and were allowed to recruit even without permission. The Film Club, one of the groups not authorized to participate in the event, declined to comment for fear of reprisal from college administration.

Daniel P. Diaz commented that “It is extremely frustrating that when a conservative organization like YAF tries to start a chapter on a public university, administrators who proclaim that colleges are the market place of ideas proceed to be intolerant and censor views contrary to the liberal ideology. The public should be outraged at ideologically driven college faculties and as a community we should demand that all views receive the same outlet on college campuses. Call your local college and demand free speech!”

This woman should lose her job. I hope you persue getting some justice on this issue or it will just keep happening.
Looks like you ran into one of the few remaining true believer for Obama.

  6. NCMike says:

YAF should sue the school. The Alliance Defense Fund or David Horowitz’ Freedom Foundation should be brought on board. It’s time the leftie’s got a taste of their own tactics. The school’s action is an affront to freedom of speech as well as to the purported marketplace of ideas that a university is supposed to represent. The administration is simply a leftist tool and should be held accountable for their cowardly action.

  7. PhilipJames says:

You have to realize that this is a war…. between the Obama lovers and everyone else. They will do anything in their power to attack anyone who does not kiss Obama’s butt. Fight back, sue the school, do not give in or give up.

  8. Not Likely says:

Did you request a comment from Ms. Ford-Morris? By whose description was she “visibly upset” by the anti-Obama literature? What was the nature of the anti-Obama literature?

What a delightfully fact-free “news” story.

  9. Robert says:

To Not Likely- There are several facts that you choose to ignore. I suppose you doubt they were even escorted off campus by police. Obviously you’re a kool aid consumer of epic proportions. Your ideaology drives your discernment. You believe in free speech so long as you agree with the speaker and the presentation. All across the countries’ campuses conservatives have had water bottles, cream pies, etc, tossed at them by “tolerant, open-minded” PUNKS. The inconvenient truth is that liberals are intellectual fascists.

  10. Bryan says:

YAF should contact the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) — see http://www.thefire.org/. They regularly sue colleges that restrict free speech on campus.

  11. [...] the Orlando Political Press, which really just published a press release from YAF. Hat tip to Big Journalism and Jim Hoft at [...]

  12. yrebc says:

Don’t let this thing go. I am an old YAFer from the days of Barry Goldwater. Throughout my lifetime I have seen conservatives humiliated, smeared and ridiculed. Fight back. There are a lot of resources out there to help you get justice. Things we old bulldogs never had. David Horowitz is a good guy whom you should contact. Also Mark Lavin’s Landmark Legal Foundation may help you.

Even though it is a state college they probably also get some type of federal funding as well as state money, tax payer money, many of whom are conservatives. College administrators have no right to use tax money to promote, directly or indirectly, their political agenda.

    Fight back. God bless you.

  13. [...] the Orlando Political Press: (Lake Worth, FL) On Tuesday September 7, 2010 at around 11:00am one Palm Beach State College [...]

  14. Kay Bretton says:

Fight back!!!!! And Christina Beattie….I am so proud of you for being a doer and not just a sayer. The world needs more young people like you out there fighting the good fight.

  15. [...] College Officials Shut Down Student Conservative Group After Seeing Anti-Obama Literature I’ve been called a bigot, a racist, intolerant, a Fascist, a Nazi, and several other less printable things by Leftists. However its been my experience that I can’t hold a candle to Leftists when it comes to bigotry and intolerance. It must be the Left’s way or you get the highway. [...]

  16. Abraham3 says:

I am bothered by several things that appear in reports of this incident:

    1) All reports appear on conservative blog sites

    2) In virtually every single report, Ms Ford-Morris, the black woman in the video speaking to student Christine Beattie, is said to be reacting to anti-Obama material. Yet not a word out of her mouth supports that contention. What is the source of that opinion and why is it repeated as fact?

    3) The video ends as the YAF party is purportedly going to speak with the Dean of Students who is reported to also have given at least implicit permission for YAF to attend Club Rush. Did they meet with the Dean and what was the result of that meeting?

    4) Why do no stories nor even the YAF website itself display copies of the email communication which YAF claims it had with Ms Ford-Morris?

    5) None of the reports of this story make any attempt to interview Ms Ford-Morris (to, perhaps, ask her why she did what she did) or follow up with any other official of the school.

    6) None of the reports show the “anti-Obama” materials that they claim drove Ms Ford-Morris to take this action.

  17. [...] what happened at Palm Beach State College you would need to check sites on the blogosphere such as Orlando Political Press: (Lake Worth, FL) On Tuesday September 7, 2010 at around 11:00am one Palm Beach State College [...]

  18. dmartin72266 says:

Get used to it. This is the way liberals operate. They can’t win in a rational debate, so they shut you down.

  19. Jayman says:

The best way to play the way the libs play is to make them pay. If you sue, sue the college AND the individual. ALWAYS go after the individual as well. If you win a suit against the college with or without monetary damages, it helps the cause of freedom, but it ultimately costs the taxpayers and students. The individual idiot remains unharmed. But if the individual is also named and their personal assets suddenly become at risk due to their stupid behavior, maybe it will at least make the individual rethink their behavior in the future. If you sue only the college and win, and the individual is then let go, she’ll simply move on and likely discriminate against others in the future. The only way to win in this idealogical war is to make them pay. HIT them in their personal wallet.

  20. [...] what happened at Palm Beach State College you would need to check sites on the blogosphere such as Orlando Political Press: (Lake Worth, FL) On Tuesday September 7, 2010 at around 11:00am one Palm Beach State College [...]

  21. Steve In Tulsa says:

This is how liberals operate. Censorship. Shut down opposing voices. Liberals cannt defend their policies so they censor people they disagree with so they don’t have to defend their positions. This is what calling everyone a racist is about: shutting up the other side. Well the race card has been over drawn. Obama has called over half the country racists over and over. People know when they are being slandered and insulted.

It doesn’t matter how much she hides YAF from her studends because democrats are being fired in about forty days.

  22. Ashleigh says:

President Teddy Roosevelt said “Speak softly and carry a big stick.” Guess which President says “Teleprompt loudly and hoist a white flag!” (To see a related web article that some have banned, Google “Obama Fulfilling the Bible.”)

Justice Ginsburg Violates Her Oath

By KrisAnne Hall

Our founders deliberately did not establish a democracy, because in that form of government, the majority would always choke to death the desire for Liberty of a minority. Yet another point that Mrs. Ginsberg might be wise to share with Egypt instead of encouraging them to strive “to achieve a general democracy…”

The dichotomy of her praise and criticism of our founders and our Constitution shows that she is greatly misinformed of both…

Decision 2012, What Does It All Mean?

By Allen Wilson

Good bye Presidential hoopla we’ll see you in August.

But for now, let’s turn our thoughts to more pressing problems for Florida and the nation. Fasten your seat belts folks; it’s going to be a bumpy ride.

This won’t be a Tea Party vs the Establishment event, that’s just so 2010. No, this is a showcase for Agenders, Fair Taxers, Occupiers (well they don’t really vote do they”), and GOOOH’ers…

Tired Of Political Elitists Picking Our Candidates?

By Rick Steeby

I am not a fan of this two-party system where your personal beliefs have to be compromised to one party platform or the other based on the lesser of two evils.

I am reminded of my own words of how Congress has become entrenched and regardless of party they are more concerned with the power and the prestige of office then in service to their country.

Romney Wins, What’s Next?

By Tom Tillison

So after three years of toil by thousands of average everyday citizens who’ve sacrificed far more than they ever cared to, Florida supports John McCain yet again, just in a prettier package.

And just as in 2008, Florida will be the impetus that thrusts this better wrapped version identified as Mitt Romney one step closer to an eventual match up with Barack Obama.

There will be plenty of coverage breaking down the final numbers…

Clouds On A Sunny Day

By Allen Wilson

I remember the instant that the mood changed.

As my lens focused beyond the Washington Monument and upon the Capital Dome I recognized that I no longer felt proud of this city. I was embarrassed that under that dome sat men and women who first thought of themselves before they thought of their nation.
