Sarah Rumpf: Why I’m Endorsing Kurt Kelly

July 25, 2010 Opinion 60 Comments

[Originally posted along with some other local endorsements on my blog at http://www.sunshinestatesarah.com/2010/07/new-endorsements-kurt-kelly-greg.html]

I took my time making a decision on this race.  I live in District 8, and it embarrasses the heck out of me that Alan Grayson is my representative in Congress.  Part of the reason I waited so long to make an endorsement is I wanted to wait and see which candidates really were capable of knocking out Grayson, a multimillionaire and darling of liberal nuts across the internet.

I can say with confidence that I make this endorsement as fully informed as I can possibly be.  I have spoken with every single one of the Republican candidates (one I spoke with on the phone, the rest I have met in person), I’ve reviewed their websites, listened to speeches and debates, looked over their campaign finance reports, and done my own research.

Kurt Kelly has impressed me from the beginning and has always been on my “short list.”  He has a solid conservative record from his time in the Florida House, he’s warm and sincere, but also not afraid to discuss tough issues or directly attack Grayson and the Democrats controlling Washington.  Kurt has put together an amazing grassroots network.  A lot of my Young Republican friends have been long time supporters of Kelly and every HobNob I’ve attended lately always has a noticeable group of Team Kelly people running around in those bright green shirts.  Kelly has has been consistent and solid with his fundraising and won a string of straw polls with respectable margins.

I believe the Orlando Sentinel made a mistake in their endorsement of Dan Webster. Don’t get me wrong, I like Webster, I have a lot of respect for his accomplishments and record in the Legislature, but the Editorial Board’s dismissal of Kelly for Webster seems to rest solely on Webster being more “experienced.”  Hogwash.  OK, Webster has more years in the Legislature than Kelly, but that doesn’t automatically mean that he would be a better choice for Congress than Kurt Kelly.  That’s like saying “Mrs. Smith has been teaching for 20 years, and Mrs. Brown has been teaching for 10 years, so therefore Mrs. Smith is a better teacher than Mrs. Brown.”  Ummm, no, that’s not how it works.

Just because one person has a few more years working at a job, doesn’t necessarily mean that person is “better.”  Neither Webster nor Kelly are political rookies, and Kelly actually has broader experience than Webster, having worked in the private sector as well as spending many years working for conservative causes outside of elected office. I understand the current popularity of opposing “career politicians,” but experience in government should be viewed as an asset.  And Kurt Kelly is far from a career politician, having first been elected to the House in 2008.

Regarding the other candidates in District 8, Bruce O’Donoghue and Todd Long have both shown strong conservative credentials and a willingness to go after Alan Grayson’s jugular, and they’ve earned my respect for that.  Patricia Sullivan strikes me as very sincere and her grassroots volunteers are an impressive hardworking bunch, but her inability to make significant fundraising progress makes me hesitate.  District 8 is large and an expensive media market; taking on Alan Grayson will require a strong candidate and a pile of money.  It might not be fair, but it’s reality.  I hope Sullivan considers running for office again after this – she’d be great in the Florida Legislature – because I think she has a lot to offer, and she’s young enough to run for Congress again later.

Webster, O’Donoghue, Long, and Sullivan are all good conservatives but when I look at the big picture, Kurt Kelly is simply the best candidate across the board, and the best chance for the Republicans to beat Alan Grayson.

On August 24th, I will be voting for Kurt Kelly.  If you live in District 8, I encourage you to do the same.  Thank you.

  1. BrascoBoy says:

I can’t vote for Kelly or Patricia. I don’t live in Dist. 8. However, I will be able to vote for the Senate Seat. I will never be able to support Kurt Kelly as I do Patricia Sullivan. They are 2 very different people and I won’t settle for second best. After the Primary these conversations will stop and I hope we will all throw our support behind who ever ends up going up against Grayson.
So let me ask you, the same question; If and when Sullivan wins the primary, will you throw your support behind her and the Sullivan Campaign to defeat Grayson?

  2. Sam Adams says:

Yes, i will support whomever wins the primary because we need to get Alan Grayson out. That is what we need to all do.
By the way, I have said this before, I would come from orlando to help patricia if she runs in a state house or county commission or school board race. She would make a great local public servant.

  3. Gabe Ruth says:

In an earlier discussion with the Lilliputian BrascoBoy, I told him that Sullivan is a second choice for me and I would support her in the general. It is telling of how hyper partisan he is to withhold support for Kelly over SunRail.

Brascoboy, You are ineligible to vote for Kelly, but you CAN vote for Marco Rubio. Rubio brought SunRail to the floor as speaker and voted for it. Are you going to vote for Charlie Crist because you are SO ideologically pure that you can’t vote for RUBIO because of SunRail? Maybe you will vote for Kendrick Meeke? What are you gonna do? Enlighten us with your brilliance.

  4. Jeana from Lake says:

    To all the Patti fans.
You are so against Kurt for the Sunrail vote and for Mario Rubio. OK- here’s the truth. Mario was the Speaker of the House when Kurt was in the House his first year. Are you voting for Rubio? If so, you should STOP being in so inconsistant and be for Kurt as well. They both voted to save he state money by building the Sunrail- please get you facts straight.

Kurt and Rubio- were a team.

  5. Sam Adams says:

I agree with Jeana from Lake, if the Sullivan supporters support Rubio, yet do not support Kurt only because of his vote on SunRail, they are being hypocrites.

  6. Marty says:

Watched Fox News Business on Friday evening and Kurt Kelly did an awesome interview. Kurt Kelly is the candidate that defeat Alan Grayson.

  7. Jena from Lake says:

    Marty- you are so right.
Kurt Kelly did a GREAT job on Fox Buisness News last Friday last. Kurt took on ultra liberal Alan Combs and win.

We need to send him to Congress. Vote for Kurt on August 24.

  8. Marty says:

    Kurt Kelly is the candidate!

  9. Penny says:

Jeanna from Lake – How can you say voting for Sun Rail would be saving the state money? You need to get your head straight! Kurt Kelly is a true “died in the wool politician” – add in the fact it was HE who submitted the billed to the Fl House to tax all the internet sales – I thought he was against taxes! He talks out of both sides of his mouth. He states he lost sleep over the Sun Rail deal and yet he went along with the “status quo”! Who needs “status quo” politicians? Vote NO on Rubio and Kelly! I thought we wanted a clean slate and no incumbants! You can’t have it both ways!

  10. Jeana from Lake says:

    Penny-
You need to read and check out the fact. You as a taxpayer ought to praise the legislators that want to collect the sale tax you already pay on an internet transaction.

This is simple example- when I order online from JC Penneys, Penneys charges me a sale tax. The state of Florida is wanting to collect that sale tax that I the customer paid for a sale tax. Florida is getting cheated by NOT doing the right thing and allowing Penneys to continue keep it . It is not Penneys money-it is a SALE TAX that was paid.

A first grader can understand this concept,. The lies and purposeful mistruths about this issue are down right wrong.
See- Penny and your type misrepresent the whole story and truth. The truth will prevail .

Again, get your fact STRAIGHT on the Sunrail- it would save the state money. Go get the truth.
Oh- by the way, many poeple are not sleepless over the Sunrail. The unions and liberals were against the Sunrail- I guess you are a union loving liberal and the concersatives voted for it. Your ignorance is so glaring.

Wise up and take the blinders off so you can see clearly.

War On Women Can Be Fought At The Polls

By Kim Carroll

Women have the power. They take their right to vote seriously and show up at the polls in greater numbers than men according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

In 2008, 60.4 percent of eligible female voters cast their vote versus 55.7% of eligible males. According to the same study, more women are registered to vote than men, 66.6 million versus 63.5 million. Maybe that’s why the “War on Women” has taken a front seat in this election…

This post kicks off a three-part series about the crisis of spending, debt and deficits.

The next part deals with the interval between now and the inevitable arrival of the Minsky Moment, i.e. the unknown and unknowable time when an unsustainable economic phenomenon suddenly collapses.

The third post will address Gotterdammerung, or what happens after the Minsky Moment.

Is Mack Campaign Getting Desperate?

By Tom Tillison

It’s a fair guess that Connie Mack has seen some recent polling that has gotten his attention.

As the week closed out, the rhetoric coming from the Mack campaign took on a rather fervent pitch. In a press release sent out Thursday, it made the claim that opponent George LeMieux has “endorsed raising Florida’s sales tax to a nation-leading 16 percent.”

Obama’s IPAB Death Panels Limit More Than Just Health Care Access

By L. Persona

Florida Democrats believe they can win a few Republican seats in Congress and are preparing a major offensive against several Republicans facing tough challenges this year. They believe that redistricting gives them a chance to offset the seats they are sure to give up.

However, the Democrats still fail to realize the albatross that ObamaCare places on their party’s efforts…

A Black Guy At The Dallas, TX Tea Party Rally

By Lloyd Marcus

A big well dressed black guy attended the Dallas, TX tea party rally with his white buddy. Both men missed my singing performance on stage minutes earlier.

I asked the black gentleman who had an impressive physique how often he worked out. He replied, “Everyday.” His white buddy said with a chuckle, “He thinks the Tea Party is racist.”
