The Tea Party Movement vs The Political Party

By Tom Tillison
Orlando Political Press

Is it real, or is it Memorex?

On the steps of Orlando City Hall, under a blazing Florida sun, district 8 Republican candidate Bruce O’Donoghue spoke with local media on the “cozy” relationship he sees between the Florida Tea Party political party (TEA) and Democrat Representative Alan Grayson.

This press conference was called in response to a threatening letter that Fred O’Neal, the head of the TEA party, sent to O’Donoghue.  (See Below)

“Where there’s smoke there’s fire,” said O’Donoghue.

Standing with some members of the local tea party movement, O’Donoghue said he was willing to challenge the Florida Tea Party, which he called a “sham”, because it “could confuse voters” on who the tea party movement supports and could split the conservative vote.

Again, it is critical to understand that the TEA party does not represent the tea party movement, nor does it involve anyone who is seen as a leader in the movement.  The TEA party was formed by local attorney Fred O’Neal, who was a registered Democrat at the time he filed with the state.  O’Neal has since changed his party affiliation to reflect the TEA party.

This ‘political party’ is a completely separate entity from the movement, and, as such, does stand to create confusion at the ballot box.photo

When asked about the TEA party, Jason Hoyt, host of the Tea Party Patriots LIVE radio show (WORL 660 AM) and the first person to organize a tea party in Orlando, had this to say, “It’s a lie, flat out. It’s wrong, it’s deceitful and I think it’s disgusting.”

Hoyt is among a small national group of 91 known as the ‘tea party founders’, and is well qualified to speak on the issue.  Hoyt goes on to say, “These guys have completely missed the essence of the tea party movement, where ‘We The People’ decide who our candidates will be. We’re battling political parties that choose our candidates for us, and his letter proves that these guys have now become the very thing we’re trying to reform.”

It’s worth noting that Alan Grayson recently purchased advertising time during the airing of Tea Party Patriots LIVE.  This time was purchased through the station, WORL,  which splits the ad time with the show.  This is a very recent developement that many perceive to be an equalizing force to attention that has been drawn to Grayson advertising for some time on a radio show that Guetzloe hosts.

As for Alan Grayson, it’s indisputable that he stands to benefit if the conservative vote is split between the Republican Party and the TEA candidates.  So motive can easily be assigned.  However, as for any direct connections to the TEA party, as of this date, there are none.  It goes without saying that he denies any involvement.

What does exist are multiple ties between Alan Grayson and Doug Guetzloe, as detailed in an article posted last week by the Orlando Sentinel.  These ties even include Guetzloe’s son working as an intern for Grayson.

Guetzloe is a staunch supporter of the Florida Tea Party political party, even rumored to be the braintrust behind it, and, also happens to be represented by Fred O’Neal.  Yes, the same Fred O’Neal who registered the Florida Tea Party.

So, as anyone who is familiar with the local political scene can attest to, the lawsuits are flying.  The TEA party has been sued by multiple tea party groups around the state over claims to the phrase ‘tea party’.  Guetzloe, who is no stranger to litigation, is named in that suit and has now filed a counter suit against some of these same individuals.

Not exactly an encouraging sign for conservatives who are hoping to remove the uber-liberal Alan Grayson in November and restore sanity in district 8.

What is certain is that this mess stands to get a lot worse as November approaches.  Local tea party leaders are working hard to educate the public on the differences between the political party and the movement itself, as it’s their belief that informed voters are the greatest enemy to the fraudulent actions of political opportunists.  Stay tuned!

Dear Mr. O’Donoghue:

People who know me know that one of my “rules of life” is to try not to get drawn into fist fights with midgets. But, in your case, I’m going to make an exception.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Fred O’Neal. I, not Alan Grayson, founded the Tea Party political party. I did so because in my opinion and as Polk County Commissioner and 12th District Congressional candidate Randy Wilkinson puts it, the Republican Party and the Democratic Party are just two wings of the same bird of prey.

You obviously like the Republican Party. I don’t. Why I don’t like the Republican Party is primarily because I know that the $350,000 you’re so proud of raising probably came with a price. In my experience, most Republican politicians have to sell their souls to the devil to raise the kind of money they raise. In my experience, big business and special interests have traditionally bought and sold Republican politicians like commodities. As a consequence, Republican politicians, in my experience, tend to vote the way their “masters” tell them to vote, rather than in the best interest of the people.

But that’s okay. If you think “trickle down economics” and representing special interests is best for the country, then you have a right to say so and you have a right to run for office in a political party which generally agrees with your philosophy.

I, on the other hand, disagree. I think the American people have been “trickled on” enough.

That’s not my beef with you.

My beef with you is your calling the Tea Party a “sham” political party and your questioning our right to even exist.

A little background on how the Tea Party got founded – for over twenty years I’ve been working with Doug Guetzloe and others to fight tax increases and big ticket boondoggle projects like Sunrail.

In 2006, with it being apparent that the Republican Party (at least at the state level) had become the “tax and spend” party, Doug and I looked into what it would take to form a political party. At the time, we thought about calling it the “Ax the Tax Party,” but the name sounded a little klunky and we didn’t do anything.

In August of 2009, with the emergence of the T.E.A. (Taxed Enough Already) movement, I pulled out my old research and went ahead with forming the Tea Party. I didn’t roll it out publicly until November, after Doug Hoffman’s showing in NY23 and the apparent groundswell of dissatisfaction with both political parties.

By November, Doug and Nick Egoroff had been kicked out of the Republican Party by the now infamous Jim Greer. So, Doug and Nick both being friends, I asked them to come join me. Thankfully, they agreed.

As an aside, Alan Grayson had nothing to do with any of the above. He didn’t give me the idea to form the party. He didn’t pay me to do so (no one paid me to do so). Moreover, I’ve never met Alan Grayson. I’ve never talked with Alan Grayson. In short, I wouldn’t know Alan Grayson if I ran him over with my car.

But I digress. Since November 2009, Doug, Nick and I have been recruiting candidates (and not just for the 8th Congressional District). But, as to the 8th Congressional District, I first met with fellow attorney, Todd Long. The meeting was arranged by a mutual friend, Alicya Simmons, the ex-wife of former State Rep. David Simmons. Todd, Alicya, myself and another attorney, Mark Fisher, met for about an hour. I tried to convince Todd of the advantages of running on the Tea Party ticket. But, Todd wanted to run as a Republican, and so he politely said “no.”

Next, Doug, Nick and I met with Dan Fanelli. We had several meetings with Dan. Unlike Todd, Dan couldn’t make up his mind what to do. We gave him a deadline (because we needed to move on if he wasn’t going to run on our ticket). The deadline came and went and still no decision from Dan. So, we moved on.

As another aside, it’s humorous to read Dan say he “turned us down cold.” That couldn’t be further from the truth. Todd “turned me down cold,” in a polite way. Dan … we just never got an answer from him.

Luckily Todd turned us down and luckily Dan couldn’t make up his mind because that brought us to Peg Dunmire.

Peg was a total surprise. I hadn’t heard of Peg prior to our meetings with her. Peg is spunky. Peg is knowledgeable. Peg is 100% right on all the issues. Peg would make a great Congress-person. But, what attracted me most to Peg is how much she cares about her granddaughter and the kind of country we’re leaving behind to our kids and grandkids.

But I digress. I, too, read Mark Schlueb’s article in the paper. I like Mark. I think he’s a good guy. We go way back. But, Mark needs his job. So, Mark does what he’s told. His “masters” (the people who run the Sentinel) HATE Doug Guetzloe (and they don’t like me very much either). The reason they HATE Doug Guetzloe is because Doug has historically been the main opposition to all the taxpayer funded downtown boondoggles the Sentinel tries to push down our throats in order to improve the value of their property downtown (question: is it just a coincidence that the main SunRail station is only a block away from the Sentinel’s property downtown?).

So when Mark writes a story about Doug (or me), I know what his instructions are and where the article is going. For example, I gave Mark a statement about Grayson’s involvement (or, I should say, non-involvement) with the Tea Party. But, not surprisingly, Mark didn’t use my statement in his article, because it just didn’t fit the story line he was trying to create. What I told Mark was that, unfortunately, Grayson hasn’t contributed any money to the Tea Party. But, if Mark were going to contact Grayson for his story, I asked Mark to tell Grayson he could either contribute on-line at our web site or he could send a check to the mailing address on the website, or, if the check were $500 or more, I’d personally go by and pick up the check.

Which brings me back to your press release calling the Tea Party a “sham” political party – what is it with you Republicans? Why do you feel you’re “entitled” to be the voter’s only alternative to the Democrats? Where did that sense of “entitlement” come from? I’ve checked the Constitution. I can’t find it there. I checked the Florida Statutes. I can’t find it there. I even checked my FHP driver’s manual. I didn’t find it there, either. Why do you think the voters should only have two choices? In every other area of American life people have more than two choices. Yes, there’s Burger King and McDonald’s. But there’s also Wendy’s. Where does your sense of “entitlement” come from?

As you may be aware, a recent New York Times/CBS News poll showed that 46% of Americans say the country needs a new political party. Are you saying 46% of the people are wrong?

Regardless, you’ve picked a fight that’s going to cost you. In case you were wondering, “O’Neal” is an Irish name. Genetically, therefore, I suffer from an acute case of “Irish Alzheimer’s,” a condition which causes you to forget everything but the grudges. In case you haven’t figured it out by now, I now have a grudge with you.

Specifically, if by some fluke you become the Republican nominee for the 8th Congressional District, and if by some fluke Peg Dunmire were to want to withdraw from the race, I, personally, am going to beat her with a stick until she agrees to stay in the race to the end. Or, if despite my best efforts she still withdraws, I will see to it that someone else takes her place so that there is a Tea Party nominee on the ballot in November opposing you.

And, if you ever again in your lifetime decide to run for any other public office, whether it be dogcatcher or water district commissioner, I’m going to, personally, make sure there is a Tea Party nominee on the ballot opposing you.

You are going to personally find out how wrong you are in saying that the Tea Party is a “sham” political party.

Sincerely,

Fred O’Neal

When O’Neil said this: “Why I don’t like the Republican Party is primarily because I know that the $350,000 you’re so proud of raising probably came with a price.”

i actually agree with him. Bruce IS a typical Republican sellout. That doesn’t excuse O’Neil from keeping a fake party in the race for a personal vendetta. The Doug Hoffman example is a poignant one though. If Bruce turns out to be a big enough RINO, it might be justified to run a third party against him even if it means losing to Grayson. But only one that the grassroots believe in; not Peg Dunmire. We shouldn’t go back to electing RINOs because that is what got us to this point. I know we hate leftists like Grayson, but look at how good Obama is for the tea party movement. Keeping Grayson in office for two more years could have benefits for rallying conservatives.

The difference between O’Neil and Hoffman is huge. Hoffman had principles. O’Neil doesn’t appear to have a core. O’Neil is animated by personal animus. He is the midget.

  2. Diane says:

Where is the threat in that letter Mr. O’Donoghue? You are making statements of which you cannot back up. If you can, please do. I see no threat in Mr. O’Neal’s letter. Even this article again goes over the same ole things with no proof of what is being said.

Once more I will tell you that people who the Tea Party Party talk to DO tell them that they are not part of the movement, but a new political party in Florida. What are you so afraid of? Split the vote does not work.

Small turn out at the press conference??

  3. Babe Ruth says:

Where the hell are all of the comments on this? This is huge.

  4. mspencer50 says:

Since Peg has denied (on numerous occasions) that she was not the first choice of the Florida Tea Party political party puppeteers, I wonder how she feels now that one of the puppeteers has freely acknowledged she was the THIRD choice to perform in their puppet performance.

Let’s see… Fred has threatened to beat Peg with a stick if she fails to perform to Fred’s expectations and decides to drop out of the race. I’m thinking that makes Fred the Michael Vick of Florida politics. Of course, that parallel falls apart as Peg Dunmire may possess the fighting skills of a poodle, but certainly not those of a pit bull.

Of course a good attorney would never write a letter like the one above that was sent to Bruce O’Donoghue with all the veiled threats (and the direct ones as well). I guess that leaves us to draw our own conclusions about the abilities of Fred O’Neal as an attorney.

  5. I wonder how all the TEA candidates feel being publicly identified with the designation of TEA which denotes the bottom of the barrel..

It is a emblem that says “I am sinking like a lead balloon”

  6. Rchard Riker says:

The more facts that are brought out about the relationship between Grayson and Guetzloe the more it shows the disdain they have for the voters of the 8th district. Their hubris is staggering. Their self interest palpable. Ever hear of Occams’ Razor, it’s a theory that states”The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.” It’s easiest to see that the reason Guetzloe, O’Neii, and Egoroff hijacked the tea party name was for their own self interests and that included their cozy working relationship with Al Grayson. After Peg Dunmires extremely poor interview with conservative organization Icaucus, out of a number of candidates interviewed hers was a real joke, she was easy pickins’ for the Guetzloe bunch to scrape up. The only candidate in this race who has consistently stood above the fray is conservative Republican Patricia Sullivan, she is also the person who won the endorsement of Icaucus. Patricia Sullivan is the one candidate who will restore dignity and honor to our district when she is elected this November and Al Grayson is sent packing.

  7. sray says:

Tom is absolutely correct………” Local tea party leaders are working hard to educate the public on the differences between the political party and the movement itself, as it’s their belief that informed voters are the greatest enemy to the fraudulent actions of political opportunists. “……. The more information the better… and once we get informed and involved, we can vote better… while you are getting informed, check out Patricia Sullivan, she’s staying above the fray of all this mess, but she will definitely be the best choice to replace Grayson in District 8. She is the total opposite of him, and will be such a breath of fresh air, common sense, and integrity.
She is a conservative Republican, well-versed on the Constitution, and is a real person like you and me.

  8. Marie Dubois says:

I think the most important thing folks need to know is that this Tea Party Party is in no way affiliated with the grassroots Tea Party Movement. This was an underhanded form of trickery to use the name of so many patriotic citizens who are trying to voice their opinions and concerns. Patricia Sullivan is the true Tea Party candidate in this race and deserves our votes. She is a co-founder of the North Lake Tea Party in Eustis and believes in fiscal responsibility, limited government, free market solutions and laws based on our great document, The U. S. Constitution as it was written.

  9. James K says:

Why am I not surprised that Patricia Sullivan is garnering so much support? Because she is the Sara Palin of the 8th district. She is just like us attrue conservative who believes in the Constitution, free markets and individual responsibility. It just seem that more and more are discovering her qualification. So, no I’m not surprised

  10. James K says:

I believe that the political tea party will not garner much support from the Tea Party Movement. Voters are smart enough to know that a “split” vote will not further the objective which is to Fire the Progressives and RINO. The conservative Republican candidate that far exceeds all other candidates is Patricia Sullivan. A conservative non-politician who is just like us.

  11. It will be very disappointing if O’Neal, Gutzloe and the rest of that crowd are allowed to spoil the elections through their hijack of the Tea Party name. O’Neal admits in his letter that they were going to call their party “Ax the Tax”, but decided to “steal” the Tea Party moniker after others had developed the brand, even though O’Neal and Gutzloe had nothing to do with any of the local Tea Party groups.

I hope that Peg Dunmire realizes what she has got herself into, and the disdain that will be accorded her if she garners enough votes to allow Alan Dis-Grayson to return to DC.

WE MUST ensure that we educate the local voters of district 8 that this party does NOT represent the true Tea Party movement

  12. Dominique Depaz says:

For those who have attended a Tea Party rally, the message is very clear: Washington, (Republicans or Democrats), stop spending like drunken sailors in a bar, balance the budget, eliminate wasteful spending and fraud; in short, start tightening your belt like the rest of us. The creation of a political party called The Tea Party of Florida regrettably will not accomplish this goal, but in fact will split the independent and conservatives down the middle, ensuring a victory for Alan Grayson. Divide and conquer; ask Ross Perot.
I think we have a much better chance of success with Patricia Sullivan, who did create the North Lake Tea Party movement, who is a true conservative and does not need to step outside the Republican Party to get her message across.

  13. TerriD says:

Thank you Dominique Depaz for saying what I was thinking. I’d just like to add that long before Patricia Sullivan found it necessary to co-found the North Lake Tea Party, she was active in her community. She is passionate about the need for reform in government, extremely intelligent, a very informed voter, and SHE’S ONE OF US! At this time, she feels the need to step out of her comfort zone and do something about these issues. And she is doing a spectacular job of rallying others to action. I hope you’ll check out her website, and see in her what I see – our next CongressMom! http://www.patriciasullivanforcongress.com

  14. ChrisFromEustis says:

If Peg Dunmire looks to whatever sense of honor she has, she would drop out of the race and leave the so-called Tea Party without a candidate. Having a third party will only split the votes between the more conservative sectors of the population, giving power to the liberals. The whole point of the tea party movement which includes Republicans, Democrats, etc., is that they take their principles and apply them to the two major political parties, thus restoring integrity. There’s less liklihood of losing an election if there are only two parties involved. It does seem to me that by creating that third party, you will weaken your causes.
Patricia Sullivan of FL 8 Congressional District has done everything by the sweat of her brow along with a strong and growing Patriot Army who support her, and I’m proud to be one of them. We believe in education of all the people regarding our Constitution, our country’s true history, our Founding Fathers, and our
political candidates who will represent us (voters need to really know who these people are, what they stand for, and what they’ve done throughout their lives).
We believe in supporting our candidates financially, if able, and in whatever ways we can. I can say that Patricia Sullivan is a candidate of great integrity; she is actively involved and highly respected in our community. She works sided-by-side with the people. As a home-schooling mom of four for 18 years,
she knows how to budget and how to trim the fat! Patricia Sullivan was a co-founder of the North Lake Tea Party and represents strong core conservative principles. My heart bursts with pride and patriotic joy every time Patricia Sullivan speaks; check her out for yourself at her web site,
http://www.PatriciaSullivanForCongress.com —God bless America, and God bless Patricia Sullivan!

  15. gailmarie says:

Bra’s and Panties…and not changing the subject just so ya know
As for Republicans we are playing hardball, may I observe that after last Tuesday’s primaries, there are some Republicans playing hardball, they wear bras and panties, and you talking about kicking ass, it is Republican women who are indeed playing hardball. So no need to get too stressed.
We are not going to the polls voting business as usual. But thanks for the concern and getting the word out about the fake tea party party…Today’s Voter see’s how the Dems are playing and to steal a line from Rush, who after a nice long Honeymoon was in rare form when he said. “As for Republicans playing hardball, may I observe that after last Tuesday’s primaries, there are some Republicans playing hardball, they wear bras and panties, and you talking about kicking ass, it is Republican women who are indeed playing hardball. Patricia Sullivan will be added to that growing list of Republican women when she takes out Alan Grayson.

  16. Tim from Tavares says:

I read with disbelief all this “stuff” about Patricia Sullivan. Who are all these bloggers???

    Relatives, Patricia or her sister?

Where are any real qualifications for her to serve in the Congress? I haven’t found any!

If she is so big into the importance of education, why is it that she only has a 2 year degree? That doesn’t even qualify her to be a permanent teacher in 1st grade, yet alone the more advanced grades like those in junior high and high school.

She has never run a business, and as far as we know never had a job! If so where? Balance a checkbook? That’s it? That’s all you need?

PHD in Mom? Oh my gosh, so does every other deserving Mom in the district…maybe 100,000 or more of them!

If she believes so much into the Constitution, then why is she denying candidates their Freedom of Speech Rights at events that are called Tea Party Events. I would understand if these events were “Patricia Sullivan Events.” But that is NOT the case and Patricia seems to think that any Tea Party Event that includes her Tea Party IS a “Patricia event”. Now that I have read in the Free Republic and heard it through the grape vine about those facts I have lost respect for her.

Another Sarah Palin? Are you kidding. No where close! Sarah is awesome and REAL. Sarah has actually graduated from college, ran a business, served in her local government, been a Governor, etc.

Patricia, go get the qualifications; then we’ll see you in 5.

  18. JD says:

What is the big deal? If Mr. O’Neil and Mr. Guetzloe want to register an independent type party, more power to them. I believe the Republican Party of Florida is concerned it might lose a few seats if they have “real” conservative opposition come this November.

War On Women Can Be Fought At The Polls

By Kim Carroll

Women have the power. They take their right to vote seriously and show up at the polls in greater numbers than men according to the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University.

In 2008, 60.4 percent of eligible female voters cast their vote versus 55.7% of eligible males. According to the same study, more women are registered to vote than men, 66.6 million versus 63.5 million. Maybe that’s why the “War on Women” has taken a front seat in this election…

Is Mack Campaign Getting Desperate?

By Tom Tillison

It’s a fair guess that Connie Mack has seen some recent polling that has gotten his attention.

As the week closed out, the rhetoric coming from the Mack campaign took on a rather fervent pitch. In a press release sent out Thursday, it made the claim that opponent George LeMieux has “endorsed raising Florida’s sales tax to a nation-leading 16 percent.”

Obama’s IPAB Death Panels Limit More Than Just Health Care Access

By L. Persona

Florida Democrats believe they can win a few Republican seats in Congress and are preparing a major offensive against several Republicans facing tough challenges this year. They believe that redistricting gives them a chance to offset the seats they are sure to give up.

However, the Democrats still fail to realize the albatross that ObamaCare places on their party’s efforts…

A Black Guy At The Dallas, TX Tea Party Rally

By Lloyd Marcus

A big well dressed black guy attended the Dallas, TX tea party rally with his white buddy. Both men missed my singing performance on stage minutes earlier.

I asked the black gentleman who had an impressive physique how often he worked out. He replied, “Everyday.” His white buddy said with a chuckle, “He thinks the Tea Party is racist.”
